| Description | Habitat Sandy-loamy soils, in or on edges of oak, pine, and/or hickory woodlands. Plant: Erect leafy perennial 24 to 43 inches tall, flexible, usually branched, smooth and sometimes woody stems. Leaves: Deep green, broad triangular to ovate, 1/2 to 1-1/4 times as wide as long, crowded and sessile above, more evenly-spaced from midstem and below and short-petiolate; serrate to partially double-serrate to dentate edges; fine hairs on both surfaces. Inflorescence: A few composite flower heads in terminal corymb clusters, each up to 2 inches across with 5 to 12 yellow rays with greenish veins visible on the back sides; maroon/red disk florets subtended by green phyllaries that give the disk an overall green appearance; peduncles (flower stalks) are densely hairy; involucre phyllaries (bracts) below rays are wide overlapping and covered with velvety hairs. Blooming Period: April to September.
