Description Habitat: Moderatey moist soils in woodlands, streambanks and roadsides.
Plant: Stemless perennial 2-3/8 to 20 inches tall, usually much shorter; leaves and flowers arising from rootstock, no stolons (runners).
Leaves: Two or three basal leaves on hairy petioles up to 8 inches long in various overall shapes: ovate to reniform, cordate, or triangular-ovate, 5/8 to 3-3/4 inches long and width from half as long to as long; early and late season blades usually unlobed; mid-season blades with 5 to 7 shallow to deep often irregular lobes; margins are serrate or entire, usually ciliate; surfaces smooth or moderately covered with fine hairs, also on veins.
Inflorescence: Single flower borne on a long stalk (peduncle) to about the level of the leaves; flower has 5 deep blue-violet spreading petals (2 upper, 2 lateral, and 1 lower), lateral petals with dense white hairs near the throat of the flower; lower petal with a conspicuous patch of white with blue-violet veins; sepals are lanceolate-ovate, light green to purple and pubescent; peduncle densely covered with spreading white hairs and hooked at the end.
Bloom Period: March and April.
