| Description | Habitat: Sandy soils usually in the driest, most barren, deep-sand areas in pine woods, roadsides and disturbed areas. Plant: Perennial with numerous wiry stems arching from a central point, then trailing radially away, forming a mound 3 to 6 ft. across; stems and shoots with pubescent hairs. Leaves: Alternate, linear, 3/4 to 2-3/8 inch long, sessile or nearly so; surfaces smooth to moderately hairy. Inflorescence: Solitary or loose clusters of 2 to 5 small flowers arising from leaf axils; each flower with a white funnel-shaped corolla 0.5 to 0.7-inch long with 5 shallow, ruffled lobes, 5 white stamens more or less protruding, 1 protruding style unequally divided toward the tip into 2 stigmas; 5 densely and finely hairy sepals about 0.2-inch long with acuminate tips; 2 leaf-like bracts at the base of the flower stalk. Bloom Period: May to September.
