Description Habitat: Rocky soils on slopes, in canyons, and open areas; 4,000 to 6,000 ft.
Plant: Erect perennial with multiple stems up to 20 inches tall; herbage has minute, short, fine, star-shaped hairs.
Leaves: Narrowly oblong-lanceolate, 2-3/8 inches long and 1/8 to 1/3-inch wide, on short (~3/8-inch long) petioles; edges are serrate or dentate and often purplish; the lower surfaces are hairy.
Inflorescence: Yellow-orange to reddish flowers borne singly or in clusters near stem tips about an inch across; 10 to 12 styles; ribbed calyx about 1/4-inch long with triangular lobes.
Bloom Period: July to November.
