Description Habitat: Streambanks, lake and pond margins.
Plant: Annual, or rarely short-lived perennial with erect stems, often branched at base, 12 to 32 inches tall.
Leaves: Basal leaves in a rosette, lower stem leaves alternate; basal and lower leaf blades lyrate, with the terminal lobe rounded or somewhat triangular and much larger than the lateral lobes; margins smooth, toothed, or wavy, 2-3/8 to 8 inches long and 3/8 to 2 inches wide and on stout petioles; upper stem leaves become narrower and smaller (1 to 4 inches long), lanceolate-oblong, less lobed and nearly sessile or petiolate.
Inflorescence: Elongating clusters at the end of branching stems and arising from the leaf axils, with a small compact flower head at the tip; flowers are less than 1/4-inch across with 4 small yellow spatulate petals alternating with 4 greenish-yellow oblong petal-like sepals about as long as the petals; 6 yellow stamens with white anthers.
Bloom Period: March to May.
Fruits: : Cylindrical pods up to about 3/8-inch long, straight to slightly curved, bulging, angled upward slightly on stalks.
