Description Habitat: Sandy, gravelly or rocky soils in washes, ravines, flats, grasslands, scrub and disturbed areas.
Plant: Upright perennial up to 16 inches tall; single stem or branched, sometimes woody near the base (suffrutescent).
Leaves: Linear to narrowly lanceolate 3/8 to 2-3/8 inches long; nearly sessile; pointed tips.
Inflorescence: Single or small groups of orange, yellow or red (rarely pink) flowers arising on slender pedicels 1/2+/- inch long from leaf axils; flower head about 1-1/4 inches across with 5 petals, 20 to 30 stamens and 3 stigma; blooming for a few hours in late afternoon.
Bloom Period: June to October.
