Description |
Habitat: Moist, rich soils in woodlands or bottomlands. Plant: Erect annual with one (or two) stems 8 to 20 inches tall, upper portion branched; stems have two longitudinal ridges and short stiff hairs (hispid). Leaves: Alternate stem leaves, narrowly obovate to narrowly elliptic-oblong, 1/2 to 2-1/2 inches long and 1/4 to 1/2-inch wide; sessile, entire margins, and with an obtuse tip; moderately covered with short, appressed hairs (strigose). Inflorescence: Cymes on tips of main and lateral branches with 10 or more buds and flowers; small white flowers with 5-lobed funnel-shaped corollas less than 1/8-inch long, 5 stamens and two-lobed stigma. Calyxes have 5 lobes fused in the lower portion, less than 1/10-inch long in flower elongating to 1/4 to 1/3-inch in fruit; densely covered with stiff hairs that are hooked at tips; green, turning brown in fruit. Bloom Period: March to May. Fruit: Shiny, brown, seed-like, flat nutlets contained within the calyx lobes, each about 2 mm across.
