| Description | Habitat: Dry, open brushlands and woodlands, fields and roadsides. Plant: Perennial subshrub or shrub up to 6 feet tall. Leaves: Broadly ovate to lanceolate blades, 0.6 to 2.4 inches long and 0.3 to 1.6 inches wide; tips are acute to rounded and bases are rounded to slightly cordate, surfaces are usually densely and finely woolly-hairy and rugose; on petioles up to 1 inch long. Inflorescence: Flowers about 0.8 inches across in cymes at the ends of stems (usually); 5 bright pink petals, yellowish at the base; flowers are sexually dimorphic with some blossoms having stamens extending beyond the style branches and others just the opposite; calyx lobes are lanceolate to linear-lanceolate and densely covered with glandular hairs.
