| Description | Habitat: Rocky or sandy soils, usually limestone; hillsides and drainages, streamsides and cedar breaks. Plant: Deciduous (usually) shrub about 4 ft. tall with long, sometimes twining branches that may reach 10 ft. Leaves: Opposite, nearly round to oval or obovate usually 1.2 inches long or less and 3/4-inch wide; margins entire; lower leaves with short petioles, the uppermost are sessile and connate-perfoliate forming a disk that subtends the flowers; lower surfaces are lightly pubescent. Inflorescence: Whorl of a few flowers closely subtended by the uppermost pair of leaves; corollas are white to pale yellow, usually more than 0.6-inch long, the tube a little longer than the flared portion (limb), the limb deeply two-lipped; 5 protuding stamens and yellow anthers; protruding style and white stigma. Bloom Period: March to May. Fruit: Clusters of round red or orange berries 0.2 to 0.4 inch in diameter.
