| Description | Habitat: Wide variety of soils in thickets, fencerows, near streambeds, old home sites, disturbed places; introduced species. Plant: Evergreen (in mild winters) shrub typically 5 to 13 feet tall with speading branches, usually gently arching downward; twigs are densely covered in pubescent hairs. Leaves: Opposite stem leaves with about 1 inch or less between leaf nodes, blades are obovate to elliptic, up to 2 inches long and 1 inch wide, on short ~1/8-inch long petioles; blades have smooth margins and tips are rounded or with a small notch; upper surfaces are glabrous (hairless). Inflorescence: A profusion of white flowers in many conical clusters (racemes) up to 4 inches long; flowers with a white corolla ~3/8-inch across, with 4 spreading, pointed lobes; the corolla tube is shorter than the lobes; 2 protuding stamens and one stigma; flowers are on short pedicels. Bloom Period: March to May. Fruit: Large clusters of nearly round berry-like fruit, bluish-black, 1/4-inch long and 3/16-inch wide.
