| Description | Habitat: Sandy, loamy soils in open oak groves, thorn-shrublands. Plant: Upright, leafy, perennial 6 to about 12 inches tall. Leaves: Opposite, lanceolate or narrowly obovate, about 2/3-inch long; on short petioles or sessile. Inflorescence: Solitary or a few white blossoms crowded on short spikes or clusters arising from upper leaf axils; each flower less than 1-inch long, tubular with flared corolla having 2 lips; smaller upper lip divided into 2 recurved lobes, lower lip deeply divided into 3 broad lobes; 2 stamens with yellow anthers and one pistil, all barely protruding below upper lip. Bloom Period: April to July. References: SEINet, iNaturalist and observation. Note: Possibly because the plant is not common or widespread even in its native counties, there are few details about this species in the literature, hence the descripion is a little "lean". |
