Description Habitat: Dry, often rocky, limestone or sandy soils in scrublands and open woods.
Plant: Perennial 12 to 24 inches tall (or taller), stems covered with stellate (star-shaped) and woolly hairs, older twigs gray, smoother.
Leaves: Broadly ovate with a cordate base, 3/4 to 3-1/8 inches long and slightly less wide; unlobed or shallowly 3-lobed margins are irregularly dentate or dentate-serrate; lower surface densely tomentose (woolly), upper less so; petiole nearly as long as blade.
Inflorescence: Solitary flowers in upper leaf axils; flowers about 2 inches across, 5 bright red to deep rose-red petals, bright red stamen column with yellow-orange anthers; protruding red styles and stigmas.
Bloom Period: Year-round.
