Description Habitat: Rocky soils in open woods, thickets, prairies, especially near waterways.
Plant: Erect perennial, with smooth to hairy, usually brownish-green, branched stems 2 to 5 ft tall.
Leaves: Basal leaves on petioles up to 7 inches long, blades ovate to narrowly lanceolate, 2 to 12 inches long and 2 to 5 inches wide; margins usually serrate to dentate, rarely entire; stem leaves becoming smaller, sessile and coarsely serrate to entire.
Inflorescence: Single, terminal flowers with pink to purple, spreading to drooping rays 1 to 3 inches long; domed center 5/8 to 1-3/8 inches across, with greenish to pink or purplish-brown florets.
Bloom Period: May to September.
