| Description |  Habitat:  Dry soils of various types in thickets, pine forests, canal banks, roadsides and disturbed sites.  Plant: Erect to sprawling perennial sub-shrub; single, much-branched stem up 3 to 6+ feet tall; stems branches are opposite, often upward-curving. Leaves: Opposite, narrowly lanceolate to deltate-lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, 1.2 to 4 inches long and 0.4 to 1.2 inches wide; margins are nearly entire to slightly dentate; tips are long-acuminate; upper surface slightly hair, lower rather velvety; on petioles 1/8 to 1/2-inch long. Inflorescence: Clusters of 5 to 50+ flower heads in corymbs at stem tips; each blossom less than 1/2-inch wide with 20 to 35 lilac to light purplish-blue disk flowers with similarly colored, long, thread-like stigmas; no ray flowers; cylindrical involucre with 4 to 6 layers of graduated, green phyllaries.
