| Description | Habitat: Dry sandy soils on rocky slopes and canyon bottoms, pine-oak and juniper-oak woodlands, on rimrock or among boulders, mountainous areas, 2500 to 8000 ft. Plant: Upright perennial shrub with numerous branches, 40 to 60 inches tall. Leaves: Smooth or velvety leaves in nodes of 3 to 4 on short petioles; blades ovate to lanceolate with pointed tips, 3/4 to 3-1/2 inches long; margins with short, rough hairs. Inflorescence: A few to several bright red tubular flowers in terminal cymes, each about 5/8 to 1-1/4 inches long; corollas 4-lobed and covered with short hairs; stamens not protruding, style protruding; calyx with 4 lanceolate to thread-like lobes.
