Description Habitat: Wet soils in low places and shallow water, meadows, marshes, and stream banks; from sea level to 9,000 ft.
Plant: Erect or prostrate (at base) annual or perennial 12 to 40 inches tall, smooth stems and leaves.
Leaves: Opposite or whorled, lanceolate to elliptic, 2 to 4 inches long, sessile with coarsely serrate margins.
Inflorescence: Solitary or open corymb-like arrays of showy yellow flowers 1-1/2 to 2-3/4 inches across on peduncles 3/4 to 2-3/8 inches long; 7 or 8 yellow rays and 60 to 100 yellow-orange disk florets; what appear to be narrow green phyllaries supporting the head are actually 5 to 9 bracteoles that are up 3/4-inch and mostly obscuring the actual phyllaries of which there are 8 to 12, ovate to lanceolate-oblong, yellow and often with orange to purplish tips.
Blooming Period: August to October.
