| Description | Habitat: Dry sandy or calcareous soils in grasslands, thorn-scrub pastures and disturbed sites. (As noted on herbarium samples). Plant: Rounded shrub up to 13 or more ft. tall with several much-branched stems from base; bark is grayish, twigs are dark purplish brown to dark brown, smooth to lightly covered with short, erect hairs; straight, black or grayish spines at leaf nodes. Leaves: Bi-pinnate compound leaves, 1 to 3 inches long overall with 1 to 3 (or 4) pairs of pinnae, each with 10 to 24 pairs of small, green oblong leaflets each 2 mm to 4 mm long and about 1 mm wide; solitary donut-shaped petiolar gland ~ 1 mm across, located between the two lower pinna pairs. Inflorescence: Densely-flowered ball-shaped heads about 3/8-inch across, solitary or clusters of 2 to 5 on short shoots arising from leaf axils, with many bright yellow flowers. Bloom Period: Spring or later following rains in drought years. Fruit: Straight to curved pods 2-3/4 to 6-1/4 inches long, nearly black and somewhat hairy; constricted between seeds.
