Description Habitat: Sandy or gravelly disturbed sites, waste areas and roadsides; introduced plant widespread throughout North America.
Plant: Prostrate annual, branched, radiating up to 5 feet from top of taproot; hairy.
Leaves: Opposite, pinnately-compound leaves, 1/2 to 2 inches long overall; 6 to 14 oblong to narrowly-ovate leaflets, each up to 1/2-inch long; somewhat hairy.
Inflorescence: Solitary yellow flowers on short stalks in leaf axils; each about 1/2-inch wide; 5 sepals, 5 petals up to 1/4 inch long, tips rounded or lobed; 10 stamens.
Bloom Period: June to October.
Fruit: Hard, dry burrs in 5 segments, each segment with 2-4 stout spines up to 1/3 inch long.
