Description Habitat: Sandy, disturbed soils, from 1000 to 9500 ft.
Plant: Erect perennial with several smooth, slender, branching stems 12 to 32 inches tall.
Leaves: Along lower half to three-quarters of the stem, opposite, compound once- or twice-pinnately-divided into thread-like segments 3/4 to 1-1/2 inches long.
Inflorence: Rayless flower heads about 1/2-inch long on long, smooth peduncles, each head with many yellow and/or orange disk florets; nearly cylindrical involucre with phyllaries in two sets, inner ones longer, lanceolate and purple tinged, outer ones at the base of the involucre much shorter.
Bloom period: April to October.
