Description Habitat: Sandy, rocky soils, common in shrublands and gravel bars of streambeds.
Plant: Erect annual up to 13 inches tall.
Leaves: Basal, on petioles (stems); blades oblanceolate, tapering to pointed tips, 1 to 3 inches long, somewhat hairy and may have 2 to 4 widely-spaced teeth on the edges.
Inflorescence: Cylindrical spike from less than an inch to almost 8 inches long atop a hairy scape up to 1-1/2 inches long; many small flowers with hairy, green, pointed triangular bracts and ovate sepals; whitish-tan corolla lobes are lanceolate, pointed and pressed upward against the inflorescence.
Fruit: Capsules containing deep red seeds.
Blooming Period: March to May.
