Description Habitat: Moist areas in thickets, woodlands, along streambeds; invasive plant that has been a popular ornamental shade tree in southern states.
Plant: Tree 30 to 50 feet tall with a broad, spreading, rounded crown.
Leaves: Bipinnate leaves are 12 inches long or more, each with numerous dark green ovate to elliptic-lanceolate leaflets up to 2-3/8 inches long with crenate-dentate margins and acuminate tips.
Inflorescence: Fragrant flowers in panicles arising from leaf axils; each flower less than one inch across with 5 white to pale lavender narrowly oblanceloate to spatulate petals about 1/2-inch long or less; purple, cylindrical stamen tube, 1/4 to 3/8-inch long with anthers inside; small elliptical sepals are less than 1/10-inch long.
Bloom Period: March to May.
Fruit: Yellowish round berries (drupes) about 5/8-inch in diameter; poisonous. References: "Manual of the Vascular Plants of Texas" by Correll and Johnston and Texas Invasives.
