Description Habitat: Rocky, calcareous soils on slopes, in scrublands and woodland openings.
Plant: Erect annual with smooth, branching stems, 5 to 20 inches tall.
Leaves: Narrow, linear leaves 3/8 to 5/8-inch long; lower leaves opposite, mid and upper alternate; margins entire, with widely spaced glandular hairs.
Inflorescence: Open panicles of bowl-shaped flowers ~3/4-inch across with 5 yellow-orange to salmon-colored petals usually with maroon bases; short sepals with glandular hairs; styles ~1/4-inch long united until near the tip, dark stigmas; stamens ~1/4-inch long.
Bloom Period: March to September.
