| Description | Habitat: Rocky, sandy soils and loams on hillsides and in canyons and roadsides; 2,500-6,000 ft. Plant: Perennial grass, 16 to 45 inches tall, growing in tufts; unbranched wirey stems, often with a purple tinge. Foliage: Flat leaf blades 6 to 10 inches long, 3/16 to 1/5-inch wide, smooth or rough or with sparse, thin spreading hairs (pilose); open, smooth sheath, flattened, purple-tinged. Inflorescence: Panicle 2 to 8 inches long of 2-15 spike-like, well-spaced branches, flexible and drooping, 1-5/8 to 4-3/4 inches long; secondary panicles often hidden in the lowest leaf sheaths; overlapping spikelets 1/4 to 3/8-inch long with 3 to 9 flowers; glumes lanceolate 1/8 to 1/5-inch long and without awns.
