| Description | Habitat: Dry rocky or gravelly sandy, limestone, caliche and shaly soils; open areas in scrubland. Plant: Intricately-branched, slightly rounded shrub 1 to 3+ ft. tall; hairy, light green young branches; stems becoming gray with age with long and short shoots; tips of long shoots are thorny. Leaves: Clusters of small leaves in nodes, blades are linear to linear-lanceolate or ovate, less than 1/4 to 3/8-inch long and ~2 mm wide; hairy surfaces. Inflorescence: Single flowers borne at leaf nodes; each flower about 1/2-inch across with 5 conspicuous, petal-like, ovate to oblong point-tipped, spreading, magenta sepals; 5 small petals are divided into 3 flag petals (yellow-green with purplish tips) and two others that are smaller and pink to dark red around the ovary; 4 unequal length cream-colored stamens; greenish-white stigma and hairy ovary. Fruit: Ball-shaped less than 1/4-inch diameter, hairy, with sharp prickles. Bloom Period: April and May.
