Description Habitat: Dry, sandy or gravelly soils; pastures, meadows, woodland edges.
Plant: Erect, slender biennial 2 to 5 feet tall, usually unbranched.
Leaves: Many alternate leaves crowded along stem, each 1 to 2 inches long overall, deeply pinnately-divided into 11 to 17 very narrow, linear, or thread-like segments.
Inflorescence: Numerous bright red or orangish-red flared tubular flowers forming a long spike, opening from top down; each about 1-1/4 inches long and 1/2-inch across; with 5 petals, 5 stamens and sepals; pistil with 3 stigmae extending beyond the petals.
Bloom Period: May and June.
