Description Habitat: Thickets, forested areas, palm groves, brushlands and fencerows.
Plant: Tree 20 to 50 ft. tall, evergreen or deciduous further north in its range, often with suckers or multiple trunks; dense, round crown of dark green foliage; bark is gray to brown, very rough, on older trees thick, with deep furrows, flat ridges and flaking.
Leaves: Alternate, elliptical or ovate, 2 to 4 inches long and 1 to 2 inches wide; leaf margins are entire or with small teeth on upper half; upper surfaces have a sandpaper-like texture, lower surfaces with pubescent hairs and coarse veins; leaves are dark green, turning black following a hard frost.
Inflorescence: Clusters of a few to many small fragrant flowers; each flower about 3/8-inch across with a white, flaring corolla with 5 lobes having curled under margins toward the tips, 5 protruding stamens with brown anthers, and 1 protruding greenish-yellow pistil; calyx with 5 lanceolate lobes about 1/8-inch long.
Bloom Period: Spring and summer.
Fruit: Drupes up to 5/16-inch diameter, orange-dark yellow, round, containing two small stones.
