Description | Habitat: Moist to dry sandy soil in woods, thickets and clearings. Plant: Short perennial 4 to 12 inches tall with a single or multiple weak, flowering stems. with a pair of opposite stem leaves and some basal leaves. Leaves: Linear blades, width varies but usually about 1/4-inch wide; basal leaves are 1-1/8 to 5-1/2 inches long; single pair of opposite stem leaves are 3/8 to 4 inches long; surfaces are smooth and margins entire. Inflorescence: A few flowers in a floppy raceme, each about 1/3-inch across when fully open; 5 white petals with pink striations, 5 stamens with pink anthers, and a pistil with a three-lobed style; below are 2 green, rounded-ovate sepals; flowers open up when sunny and close during cloudy weather or at night.
