Description Habitat: Open grasslands and wetlands; hill prairies, also grows on dry sandy hills and slopes.
Plant: Perennial grass, culms (stems) 3 to 40 inches tall, erect or decumbent, solitary or in small to large groups.
Foliage: Sheaths mostly smooth, sometimes with hairs higher; light green to blue-green leaf blades to 12 inches long, 1/8 to 1/4-inch wide, rough on undersides, evenly distributed along sheath.
Inflorescence: One-sided panicles 5 to 12 inches long with many (30+) branches, each with 2 to 7 spikelets, each with 2 to 3 florets. Fertile florets have colorful orange to brownish-red anthers hanging down and feathery white stigmas during the blooming period.
Bloom Period: July to October.
