| Description | Habitat: Sandy loam or limestone gravel of hillsides, ledges, prairies; found mainly in Balcones Escarpment and vicinity in Central Texas. Plant: Perennial with several trailing stems up to 2 feet long, arrising singly or a few together from slender, widely forking underground stem branches, forming loose mats. Leaves: Pinnately-compound leaves 1-3/8 to 6 inches long, each with 15 to 33 oblanceolate, obovate or elliptical leaflets; tips are obtuse to acute; upper surfaces smooth, lower with pubescent hairs. Inflorescence: Cluster of mostly white pea-like flowers in a short raceme (spike) at stem tips or arising from leaf axils; each flower about 1 inch long with 5 petals; upper petals extending forward and bending upward into a banner; lower petals tipped in purple; calyx with soft hairs. Bloom Period: March to July. Fruit: Large, round or oblong-ovoid, 3/4 to 1-5/8 inches long and 5/8 to 1-inch in diameter.
