| Description | Habitat: Various soils in fields, prairies, thickets, open woods, canyons and hillsides. Plant: Leafy perennial with ascending, erect, or arched stems 6 to 36 inches tall, often branched near the inflorescence; densely hairy stems. Leaves: Mostly alternate, crowded, and variable in shape, elliptic, oblong, or oblanceolate to lanceolate or linear, 3/4 to 4-3/4 inches long and 1/8 to 1-1/8 inches wide, sessile or on short petioles up to 1/8-inch long; upper surface is green, somewhat glossy and covered in pubescent hairs, lower surface lighter green and hairier. Inflorescence: One to several umbels at stem tips and arising from leaf axils, 2 to 3 inches across and each with up to 25 orange-yellow to red flowers; flowers are ~ 3/8-inch across with 5 petals flaring out beneath the crown that has 5 cylindrical hoods open on the inside, each having a curved horn projecting from its center and arching over the shorter yellow central column in the center.
