Description Habitat: Canyons and limestone ledges in drainages.
Plant: Large shrub or small many-branched tree, typically understory, 5 to 10 ft tall (or higher).
Leaves: Palmately-compound with 5 large, lanceolate to oblanceolate, dark green leaflets 3 to 8 inches long with toothed edges.
Inflorescence: Red or pinkish-red tubular flowers 1-1/2 inches long in clusters 6 to 9 inches long.
Bloom Period: March to May.

Notes: Another variety, A. pavia var. flavescens, has yellow blossoms and is also found in Central Texas but further west and south.
