Description | Habitat: Sandy soils in wood, creek and river bottoms. Plant: Erect short-lived perennial, 6 to 24 inches tall; stems and leaves covered with long, soft, straight hairs (villous); stems often becoming wider (dilated) below the flower heads. Leaves: Basal leaves oblanceolate to obovate or spatulate, tapering to nearly a petiole at the base, 3/4 to 5 inches long and 1/4 to 1-1/8 inches wide, shallow teeth above the middle or nearly entire; sparse stem leaves are lanceolate or oblong to ovate, 3/4 to 2-7/8 inches long, becoming smaller upward and clasping. Inflorescence: Several (1 to 6, usually 4 or less) flowers heads in an flat, open cluster at the tip of stem; each blossom 1 to 1-1/2 inches across with 50 to 80+ narrow often white or pale violet to pink rays (petals) around a yellow center disk 1/3 to 3/4-inch across; involucre beneath with 2 to 4 layers of narrow, light green and often purplish tipped phyllaries.
