Description | Habitat: Moist soils in open wet areas, edges of woodlands, stream banks, marshes, roadsides, meadows, and fields. Plant: Upright annual or biennial 8 to 28+ inches tall; single, stout, hollow, stem that is striated and hairless. Leaves: Basal (and lower stem) leaves obovate to oblanceolate in outline, pinnately-lobed (or sometimes lyrate) with up to 5 pairs of (usually) obovate lobes, the end lobe larger than laterals and nearly orbicular; overall 2 to 6+ inches long and 3/8 to 1-1/4+ inches wide; lobe margins are crenate to undulate; stem leaves are alternate and otherwise similar to lower but gradually smaller upward. Inflorescence: Flat-headed umbels of flowerheads at the tips of central stem and any lateral stems; up to 30 flowerheads crowded together initially, spreading out with age, forming an inflorescence up to 6 inches across; each flowerhead about 1-inch across with 8 to 13 yellow rays and 35 to 50+ yellow disk florets in the center; involucre with a single layer of light green, linear, smooth phyllaries.
