Description Habitat: Various soil types in open and disturbed areas.
Plant: Erect leafy annual or biennial 15 to 30 inches tall; stem triangular in cross-section and swollen beneath the flowerheads; milky sap.
Leaves: Alternate, grass-like, lance-linear stem leaves up to 10 inches long.
Inflorescence: Single flower heads with 8 to 13 long, narrow green phyllaries; many rays (100 to 200 per head); outer yellow rays and several rings of shorter rays at the center, all with 5 small teeth at tips; cluster of yellow stamens with filaments that are dark brown at the base.
Fruit: Spherical seed ball, similar to the common dandelion but much larger, 3 or more inches across.
