Description |
Habitat: Dry areas, calcareous soils. Plant: Upright annual (may be persistant) 6 to 24 inches tall with few to several branches. Leaves: Divided one to three times into narrow segments up to 4 inches long, the upper ones becoming linear. Inflorescence: Composite flowerheads 1 to 1-1/2 inches across, 8 yellow ray flowers, three-lobed, and many brown disk flowers; involucre is urn-shaped; 7 to 12 light green, pointed, narrow outer phyllaries and 8 greenish to reddish brown inner phyllaries. Description |
Habitat: Sandy, disturbed soils, from 1000 to 9500 ft. Plant: Erect perennial with several smooth, slender, branching stems 12 to 32 inches tall. Leaves: Along lower half to three-quarters of the stem, opposite, compound once- or twice-pinnately-divided into thread-like segments 3/4 to 1-1/2 inches long. Inflorence: Rayless flower heads about 1/2-inch long on long, smooth peduncles, each with many yellow and/or orange disk florets; nearly cylindrical involucre with phyllaries in two sets, inner ones longer, lanceolate and purple tinged, outer ones at the base of the involucre much shorter. Leaves: Few, sparse very thin linear stem leaves 1 to 3 inches long, three-parted or single; basal leaves may be pinnately-divided. Inflorescence: Solitary to many composite flowerheads 3/4 to 1-1/4 inches across on peduncles 1 to 6 inches long; 8 yellow ray flowers, three-lobed, and many yellow disk flowers; involucre is hemispherically-shaped; 8 to 10 green outer, almost linear phyllaries, 8 brownish-green pointed inner phyllaries.
