| Description | Habitat: Rocky, open areas, sandy soils. Plant: Upright, multi-branched, bushy perennial 1 to 2 feet tall. Leaves: Opposite leaves 1 to 5 inches long, with overall elliptical to obovate shape, incised or coarsley-toothed edges; upper leaves have bases fused together with stem piercing the center; lower leaves are either on short stalks or clasping the stem. Inflorescence: Single flowerheads at the end of long peduncles (stems); each composite head about 1-1/2 inches across, supported by four large outer phyllaries, with 8 to 13 yellow rays and many reddish-brown disk flowers; square buds.
