Description | Habitat: Damp calcareous or igneous soils in streambeds and openings; 4600 to 6900 feet in the Chisos and Davis mountains of Texas. Plant: Weakly erect perennial, 12 to 20 inches tall, single or multiple stems. Leaves: Basal and lower stem leaves petiolate, 2-3/8 to 4 inches long; upper stem leaves sessile and gradually smaller; blades narrowly lanceolate in outline and deeply pinnatifid with 6+ pairs of lateral lobes with dentate margins. Inflorescence: Clusters of 6 to 20+ composite flowers at the top of short stalks, with several bright yellow blossoms, 3/4-inch across, each with 8 to 13 rays, 40 to 55+ disk florets, and 13 to 21 green phyllaries with yellow tips. Description | Habitat: Shady, moist calcareous soils in valleys and canyons. Plant: Erect perennial, single unbranched stem 8 to 20+ inches tall. Leaves: Basal leaves crowded, oval, margins serrate, 3/4 to 3-1/4 inches long, on petioles 2 to 4 times as long as the leaves; sparse stem leaves are narrowly lanceolate or oblanceolate and usually deeply pinnately-lobed and clasping. Inflorescence: Terminal clusters of 6 to 15 or more yellow composite flowers each 1/2 to 3/4-inch across; 8 to 13+ ray florets and 40 to 50 disk florets; 13 to 21 green phyllaries below, sometimes reddish tips. Description | Habitat: Clay or heavy loam soils; open areas, prairies, disturbed areas. Plant: Erect, smooth annual 6 to 24 inches tall, usually single branched or unbranched stems; sometimes multiple stems. Leaves: Alternate leaves, 1 to 5 inches long and deeply pinnatifid with wedge-shaped, incised lobes. Inflorescence: Composite flowers at the top of short stalks forming a large cluster; each flower 1/2 to 3/4-inch across, each with 10 to 14 rays, many disk florets, and about 21 green phyllaries. Bloom Period: Late March to May.
