| Description | Habitat: Dry, very sandy soils from 4,000-8,000 incl. higher elevations in Big Bend. Plant: Erect, much-branched annual with slender stems, 4 to 18 inches tall. Leaves: Alternate, very narrow linear, leaves 1/8 to 5/8-inch long, with pointed tips, sessile. Inflorescence: Small fubbel-shaped flowers with 5 shiny yellow to yellow-orange petals less than 1/2-inch long and narrow and sharply pointed sepals; usually solitary at stem tips. | Description | Habitat: Sandy, gravelly soils in fields, grassy area, roadsides and other open areas. Plant: Erect, smooth annual 6 to 12 inches tall, single stem branched in upper portions. Leaves: Narrow linear leaves 1/2 to 1 inch long, stalkless, upright, and rigid; stem leaves alternate, basal leaves opposite. Inflorescence: Clustered, cup-shaped flowers, 3/4 to 1-1/8 inch across on short pedicels; 5 yellow petals with copper-colored centers and radiating reddish lines. Bloom Period: April and May.
