Description Habitat: Lowlands, swamps, riverbanks, levees, floodplains.
Plant: Small fan palm, 5 to 10 feet tall; usually stemless, the leaves arising from an underground stock.
Leaves: Four to ten, large, dark green leaves 5 to 6-1/2 feet long comprising a bare petiole terminating in a rounded fan of about 40 leaflets up to 30 inches long, joined together for over half of this length.
Inflorescence: Very small (~0.2 inches across) yellowish-white, blossoms in large compound panicles up to 6 ft. long, extending out beyond the leaves.
Fruit: Brownish black, spheroid, 1/4 to 3/8-inch diameter.
Bloom Period: May and June.
