| Description | Habitat: Dry, sandy or rocky soils in open areas; prairies, sandhills, and grasslands. Plant: Erect annual or biennial with much-branched, tough, almost smooth stem; up to 24 inches tall. Leaves: Alternate, widely spaced; lower leaves deeply pinnately-divided into 7 narrow linear segments, becoming undivided upward. Inflorescence: Loose clusters of 1-3 blossoms on pedicels 1-3/8 inches long at branch tips; white to pale blue tubular corolla about 1-inch across with 5 pointed, flaring petals united at base into a long (1-1/4 to 2 inches long) floral tube; stamens inside corolla throat or slightly protruding; 5 narrow, pointed, glandular-pubescent sepals, 1/4 to 3/8-inch long.
