| Description | Habitat: Water or mud in ponds, lakes, stream, ditches etc. Plant: Low-growing perennial, free-floating or rooted in mud; flowering stems are erect, bending over after flowering and about 10 inches long. Leaves: Thick, leathery ovate to round, 1 to 4-1/3 inches long and almost as wide; in basal rosettes of sessile leaves and floating or emerged petiolate leaves, petiole up to about 10 inches long and at least slightly swollen (sometimes greatly so). Inflorescence: A spike with many (4 to 15) flowers 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 inches long and wide; perianth is light blue to violet-blue with 6 tepals united at their bases; the upper three tepals have dark purple streaks, the upper central tepal has a dark purple blotch in the center and a yellow spot within the blotch; flowers open individually in the morning and wilt by night.
